All over West Africa, and in the world, the Republic of Guinea is known for its wide and rich tradition of percussion based music. This is also one of the 2 countries where the Djembe instrument originated from (The area of present-day Guinea and Mali).
Guinea rhythms are from Soussou, Malinke, Baga, Peul ethnic groups and more.
A Guinea traditional ensemble is usually composed of one to 3 double-sided drum players called Doundounfola, playing the Doundoumba. Sangban, and Kenkeni drums (Base drum). It also includes a few Djembe players for accompaniment (Djembedefola), and one lead Djembe soloist player (Djembebafola).
The combination of all those instruments is required to build each rhythm.
Group workshop:
Would you like to have a fun African drumming workshop for a group of adults / adolescents or children with no prior drumming experience in Toronto or elsewhere?
Are you running a drumming class including Djembe drums?
Would you like your students to occasionally learn new or different arrangements in a dedicated group instruction?
We are very familiar with organizing anything from corporate to school workshops!
The teaching method is focused on developing intuitive understanding of West African percussion music, with a strong focus on synchronization, as well as the basic playing rules used in Guinea West Africa drumming ensembles.
Workshop levels and goals can be customized to suit the specific needs of your group.
Whether your group is composed of absolute beginner drummers or long time Djembe players with little experience on the Doundoumba base drums, they will get a chance to further develop their Djembe playing technique, and overall understanding of Guinea rhythms, tradition and culture, through the practice of these traditional instruments in one of our dedicated group workshops.
Workshops can be taught at the location of your choice, alternatively, at our Toronto class location. We will provide all of the drums for your group.
Allow us to introduce you to the world of Guinean percussion ensembles, and its almost endless variety of authentic rhythms passed along since the 13th century, played on the Djembe and various other percussion instruments.
We are based in Toronto Canada.
